If you spent a visit to your favorite nail salon for a manicure it is a great way to give yourself a well earned
nail treatment. It's just an hour of relaxation in your hectic day, and then, when they are finished you leave the salon with soft hands and great looking nails. However.....
You need to make pretty sure that you are not leaving with fungus nails caused by a small fungus. In Europe, nail salons are not regulated or controled by official health inspections. In most countries it even is not unimaginable that 'nail techs' are not licensed to conduct their business.
This all means you have to be vigilant about nails and health care issues.
Some tips on how you keep your nails safe when visiting a nail salon:
Cleanliness rules
A clean nail salon should scrub floors and manicure tables regularly. Wastebaskets should always be emptied and cotton balls and tissues trown out after each client. The staff should appear neat and clean, wearing chirurgical gloves to prevent infection.
Washing the fungus out
Does your manicurist wash her hands between clients? Se should do that besides wearing gloves.
Sterilize tools
Cleaning tools in alcohol will not kill the fungus that causes fungus nails. The tools should be immersed in a special sterilization product for the recommended time.
Don't share tools
Tools should never be used on more than one client. Each client should have her own set of tools.
Protect your cuticles
Don't let manicurists cut your cuticles because they keep your nail beds safe from the exposure to nail infections.
The nail tech is not your doctor
Nail salon staff should never use razors or other tools to scrape corns off of your feet or to treat ingrown nails. These methods are best done by medical doctors. They are trained to diagnose and provide treatment for these problems.
Don't camouflage
If you try to cover your yellowed or even green, thickened nails with nail polish, you may harm your health. These can be the symptoms of nail fungus. Don't cover it up. You should give it air and ask your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment.
